In - Between

Concept

Situating the Self through exploring the tension within the cultural identity from the post-colonial position. The cultural identity aims to be defined in between the pre-set binary up-held by the globalized power structure. Between the lack of representation and internalized colonization, the identity remains in a conflict seeking self-determination. This series is a navigation of the proposed perception of the exploded Self as an Other. Existing between shame and pride and reflecting the realistic mitigation of traditional idealisms and global dominant culture in a contemporary setting.

Process

The process starts by casting my body and concealing it as a signifier of the shame that hovers over the colonized body, erasing its features. I proceed by cutting the cast body into pieces, fragments of what once was whole. I add layers of construction materials, polishing the exterior to be smooth, shiny, and acceptable to the world. In its interior, the cast remains untouched, unaltered to be covered by textiles that symbolize the collective identity that the body strives to reclaim. Fabric is woven from lines of layers that make up the history and culture of an identity that has been subjected to colonization and cultural erasure. The body stays hidden, fragmented, and absent. This series of objects represents the structures that shape the identity of shame and pride.
